Energy Efficient Self Build Home

The advantage of a new build home is that every measure can be taken to improve the energy efficiency of your house. The energy used in homes accounts for 48% of Britain's greenhouse gas emissions.

Below are our top tips to creating a more energy effcient home.

Boiler Type
Installing a condensing boiler will be more energy efficient - around 12% more efficient than modern conventional boilers.

Draught proof windows and doors
Draught proofing materials prevent cold air getting in and warm air getting out.

Energy efficient light bulbs
Energy efficient light bulbs cost between £1.50 and £5, using less electricity and last for several years.

Green Tariffs
Choosing a renewable electricity supplier by signing up to a green energy tariff. Generally there are two tarriffs used - Green Power Supply or Green Fund.

Green Power Supply is where the electricity company ensures that for every unit of electricity you use, the same amount of green electricity is generated.

Green Fund is where the electricity company takes the extra that you pay on your bill and invests the money into new renewable energy projects.

Home insulation
Loft and wall cavity insulation you will not only be warmer in winter, but will also save money on your fuel bill. Eight inches of insulation in your loft can save around 20% of your heating costs.

Installing a renewable energy system
Solar hot water panels can provide 60% - 70% of your annual hot water needs.

Photovoltaic (PV) panels are less efficent (7%-14%) but are useful for generating electricity in remote areas. If combined with a wind turbine then the majority of ones needs can be met.

Thermostats
Room thermostats provide heat until the desired temperature is required.

Hot water cylinder thermostat can reduce the temperature of your stored hot water and save yourself money, while preventing the water getting excessively hot too.

Thermostatic radiator valves provide control over the temperature of each room separately which can save energy.

Timers
Controlling heating on a timer not only provides a comfortable environment but ensures heating is used at the times you require it. No more going out and forgetting to turn the heating off.
